Chapter 535:
I didn’t answer. I simply hung up the phone. Connor’s call left my emotions even more tangled. While I knew that everything had been caused by Herbert, after hearing Connor’s words, I didn’t know what to do.
No. I couldn’t keep thinking about this.
I couldn’t waver. I wouldn’t.
In an effort to escape the emotional turmoil, I decided not to think about anything for a while. I strolled through the park. After some time, when I decided to head home, I walked toward a patch of holly. Suddenly, I saw Klein standing in front of me. My heart filled with joy upon seeing him.
“He must have heard from Jane that I’m here and came looking for me because he’s worried about me,” I thought. This was just like Klein. He was always considerate and caring toward me. He thought of Lucky as his own daughter. Even if he had a child in the future, I knew he would never treat Lucky or Lucas badly. I firmly believed that.
I raised my hand to call Klein over, but just as I was about to speak, I saw two men walking toward him. One was fat, and the other was thin. I couldn’t help but frown.
Why did these two men look so familiar? It felt as though I had seen them before. My hand froze in the air as I suddenly realized who they were. The fat man and the skinny man were the two thugs who had bullied me two years ago at Qingshan Mountain. Seeing them here now, I was shocked and furious. I could call the police to have them arrested immediately.
But why were they with Klein? There seemed to be some sort of dispute between the three of them. Could it be that they knew each other?
I instinctively crouched down, carefully observing what was happening. My entire body trembled. It seemed like things weren’t as simple as they appeared. It looked as though Klein had made some kind of deal with those two men. Slowly, I moved to the side of a nearby plant, trying to keep my distance while still watching Klein and the two men.
After exchanging a few words with them, Klein pulled a leather envelope from his suit and handed it to the fat man. The fat man said a few more things before he and the thin man walked away. At that moment, I was in complete shock. I was certain the envelope contained money, but why would Klein be giving money to those two people?
I wasn’t foolish. I could put the pieces together. Was it possible that the fat man and the skinny man didn’t come to me because of Connie and Emma, but instead were taking orders from Klein? My mind raced as I tried to make sense of it.
No! Klein wasn’t that kind of person. He couldn’t be.
I stayed hidden, watching Klein look around before he left. What was going on between them? As I crouched there, a cold shiver ran through me. I didn’t know who I could trust anymore. Even Klein seemed to be keeping secrets from me. I thought about it for a while, and something didn’t sit right. Two years had passed since that event, so why were Klein and the two men still in touch? Had they been extorting him, or were they still making secret deals?
I wandered around the park for a long time, lost in thought. When I finally returned home, Klein greeted me with a smile.
“Where did you go? Why are you back so late?”
