Hearing this, Herbert frowned and finally said, “Bella, do you want to reconsider?”
“What do you mean?”
I looked at Herbert sharply, feeling disgusted by his words. He clearly sensed my disgust, but he still tried to persuade me.
“After all, we have two children. Even if it’s not for me, I hope you think carefully about this. If you marry Klein, it will inevitably affect the children’s upbringing.”
At that moment, I fully understood what Herbert was implying, and I immediately cut him off.
“Herbert, I won’t change my decision to marry Klein. He has been taking care of Lucky since she was born. He treats her as his own daughter. Even though Lucky hasn’t been with you, she has still had a father’s love. That love came from Klein.”
“That’s why my marriage to Klein will not affect Lucky. As for Lucas, I won’t treat him unfairly because of our past. I will fulfill my duty as his mother.”
“I have always felt guilty toward you and Lucky. And I owe Lucas even more for not allowing him to experience a mother’s love. It’s all my fault.”
Herbert’s voice was filled with remorse.
“You don’t owe me anything, and I don’t owe you anything. We come from different worlds, and there is no future for us together. Lucky and Lucas are your flesh and blood, and you should do everything you can to make up for the time lost with them.”
Although I said these words, my voice trembled. Memories of the difficult days, of Lucas’s suffering, and of Lucky’s childhood struggles flooded my mind. It had taken so much to reach this point.
Taking a deep breath, I steadied myself and said, “We need to discuss how to raise both Lucas and Lucky.”
I had been thinking about this for a long time. I didn’t want to be selfish and take away their right to experience the love of both parents. They deserved to have both of us in their lives. But reconciliation between Herbert and me was impossible, so we had to come up with the best possible arrangement for their upbringing.
“What do you think?” Herbert asked.
I hesitated for a moment before responding, “I don’t think I’m mature enough to decide this alone. I want to hear your opinion. Lucas has already started kindergarten, and he does need both his father and mother. So I was thinking… what if Lucas stays with you from Monday to Friday and comes to me on weekends?””Saturday and Sunday?”
“We’ll do as you say.”
Herbert nodded.
I added, “As for Lucky, she is still too young and needs her mother’s care. I want her to continue living with me. When you miss her, you can come and see her, or if you have time to take her out for half a day, you’re welcome to. What do you think?”
This was the plan I had come up with after thinking about it for the past two days. I believed it was the best arrangement for both children.
Herbert pondered for a moment before responding, “For now, I agree with you. The children are still young, so this is the only way. But when they grow older, I hope they can live with me. You can visit them anytime and take them out on weekends.”
