As Herbert spoke, his expression was filled with self-blame and guilt. He rubbed his face in frustration. I had never seen him so broken, so remorseful.
I forced myself to hold back my emotions and continued, “We were about to get married, and I met Lucas. Why didn’t you tell me about him then?”
Herbert looked at me intently and asked, “Do you remember that day we were going to get our marriage certificate? I told you I had a huge gift for you.”
Bella’s POV:
I thought back to the past and nodded. I remembered that he did say he would give me a big gift that day. Could this gift be… Lucas?
Herbert nodded.
“Yes, I just wanted to get the marriage certificate and then tell you about it. I didn’t expect that there would be another accident.”
At that moment, I couldn’t help but sneer.
“What accident? You didn’t go with me to get the marriage certificate. Instead, you chose to hold a press conference with Caroline to announce your marriage. Herbert, how long do you plan to keep lying? Didn’t you tell me that the person you loved was Caroline…?”
“It’s because Caroline kidnapped Lucas.”
Herbert interrupted me. Hearing this, I stared at him in shock.
“I finished the meeting that day and was going to look for you, but I received a phone call from Caroline. She said Lucas was in her hands!” Herbert said.
Looking at the pain in Herbert’s eyes, I opened my mouth. Although I still doubted his words, I couldn’t help but want to continue listening.
“Lucas is my son. I had to save him. I could only do what she said. I held a press conference and announced our marriage in public,” Herbert continued.
After hearing his words, I hesitated for a moment.
But in the end, the story still seemed too ridiculous.
“Herbert, your ability to make up stories is getting stronger. Do you think you can convince me with just a few words? I know your power in the city. Even if you were threatened by Caroline because of Lucas’s safety, what about the future? You should have had plenty of opportunities to explain everything to me and clarify it. But what did you do? What did you do except hurt me endlessly?”
After shouting the last sentence at him, I suddenly got up, turned around, and walked toward the door. I couldn’t stay here any longer. I couldn’t stay in this suffocating atmosphere for another minute. I didn’t want to listen to his nonsense anymore!
Seeing that I was about to leave, Herbert quickly got up and grabbed my shoulder. He said urgently, “Bella, let me finish what I want to say, okay?”
I struggled, forcing the words out.
“I don’t want to hear your lies. What you said isn’t true!”
The painful memories felt like blades cutting into my heart, a heart that had only just begun to heal.
“I know that I hurt you deeply. It’s all my fault. If you hate me, you can hit me, scold me, or even stab me with a knife. I beg you to listen to what I have to say. Please?”
