Chapter 428:
Because I deeply understood that I was the sinner.
It was all because of me.
Connor had indeed brought Bella to the hospital, but in reality, I had been the one to plan it. I had instructed Connor to contact the doctor and the hospital.
But in the end, I couldn’t overcome my inner obstacles.
While I was taking care of Lucas at the hospital, Connor drove Bella there.
To be honest, when I learned that Bella had begun the operation, I felt a sense of relief. There was finally hope for Lucas. He wouldn’t have to die after all.
But what followed was painful accusation.
Perhaps Bella was right. Maybe I was a devil.
It was very quiet outside the operating room.
The cold corridor felt like a pool of stagnant water, making me anxious and worried. I stood in front of the window, my fist pressed against the hard wall.
“I’m sorry for the child in her belly and for her. It’s all my fault. If I had been cruel enough to break up with Caroline, Lucas wouldn’t be in danger. Bella and our second child wouldn’t have suffered like this.”
After that, I punched the cold, hard wall, and my hand was covered in blood.
“Mr. Wharton…”
Connor seemed like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he didn’t say a word.
I stopped hitting the wall and turned to sit on the row of chairs, my hands buried in my thick hair.
“Mr. Wharton, this was my doing. I am the one who should bear the sin,” Connor said, still trying to comfort me.
“Connor, you did it for me.”
I felt guilty and remorseful. I didn’t want to hurt Bella, but I only ended up hurting her more.
“I’m neither a competent man nor a competent father!” I admitted, feeling the weight of my failure.
“Mr. Wharton, the doctor said that if the child is born at eight months and a week, there should be no problem with her health. Don’t blame yourself too much. You still need to take care of Lucas,” Connor added.
Connor’s words slightly eased my dejection.
That’s right. Lucas was the one who needed me.
I must watch him become healthy…
Another hour passed.
The door of the operating room opened, and a doctor in a white coat hurried out.
“Doctor, how is she?” I immediately asked.
The doctor removed his mask, showing a small smile at the corner of his mouth.
“The pregnant woman has just given birth to a baby girl. All her vital signs are stable, but since she’s a premature baby, she has been placed in an incubator.”
