Chapter 419:
What did she mean? How could my child be related to Klein’s grandmother?
Grandma gave me a knowing smile, her eyes filled with amusement.
“Bella, I may be old, but you can’t fool me. I can tell that Klein likes you.”I understood what Ms. Leina was implying.
Klein came here almost every weekend, always bringing a lot of things—most of which happened to be things I liked. Bert had mentioned before that Klein used to visit only once a month.
Hurriedly, I tried to explain.
“Ms. Leina, you’ve misunderstood. Klein and I are just good friends. I’m going through a difficult time, and he’s simply being kind by letting me stay here.”
Ms. Leina sighed.
“What a pity! Klein is just unlucky.”
I quickly added, “Klein is such an outstanding man. I’m sure he’ll find someone who’s truly right for him in the future.”
Ms. Leina glanced at me with a knowing look.
“A wonderful woman shouldn’t only care about herself and ignore Klein’s feelings. Take Vivian, for example. She pursued him for years but always ended up giving up. Fortunately, they broke up.”
I fell silent, unsure of how to respond.
Then, her gaze shifted to my belly.
“Where is your child’s father? Is he refusing to take responsibility? Tell me who he is, and I’ll help you.”
I had no desire to talk about him.
Quickly, I replied, “Ms. Leina, the father of my baby is not a good person. I don’t love him anymore, and I won’t marry him. The doctor said that if I don’t keep this baby, I may have difficulty getting pregnant in the future. So I’ve decided to have this child, even if it means becoming a single mother.”
Ms. Leina looked surprised.
After a few moments, she shook her head and said, “Maybe it’s because I’m old and the world has changed, but I just don’t understand young people these days. Why are so many of you unwilling to get married? Klein and Vivian were together for years, and in the end, they still broke up. And then there’s Klein’s cousin—he’s not married either. I hear he has a sick girlfriend. I really don’t know what’s happening to relationships these days. It’s as if no one believes in marriage anymore.”
I froze for a few seconds.
Klein’s cousin? That had to be Herbert. And his “sick girlfriend”—it could only be Caroline.
Everyone knew Herbert had never abandoned Caroline, and even Ms. Leina was aware of it.
Perhaps he truly did love her deeply.
Although I had found peace here and no longer allowed myself to dwell on Herbert, hearing his name still made my heart ache.
