Mom smiled reassuringly.
“It’s nothing. I just fell down accidentally.”
“When did you fall? Why didn’t you call me?”
I complained as I checked my mother’s arm. Once I confirmed there was no major injury, I sighed in relief.
“You were too far away from home. I didn’t want you to worry about me,” she said.
“Please be more careful in the future,” I said. At that moment, my mother took my hand and, in an embarrassed tone, said, “Bella, could you take a few days off to help take care of your sister? Although Hank hired a nanny, she really needs her family right now. It’s difficult for me to take care of her at the moment…”
Upon hearing this, I quickly responded, “Mom, I’ll take care of her. Don’t worry, I’ve already applied to work locally.”
“Really? That’s great!” My mother’s face lit up with happiness.
I then noticed Hank looking at me, his gaze complicated. I couldn’t help but frown, and Hank immediately looked away.
Another hour passed before a male doctor, wearing a white coat and mask, came out and said, “Betty’s family can go to the regular ward. She’s out of danger now. The nurse will take her there.”
“Thank you, doctor.”

I thanked him and hurried to the ward with my mom. Betty gave birth to a lovely daughter. After staying in the hospital for more than a week, Betty recovered and was finally discharged. The nanny held the baby in her arms, I supported Betty, and Mom and Hank carried the rest of the things behind us.
We returned to Hank’s home.
I helped Betty onto the bed in the master bedroom, and the nanny placed the baby in the crib. Then, the nanny went to prepare food for Betty. Hank brought in two glasses of water before leaving the bedroom. My mother, looking concerned, turned to Betty and said, “Betty, my hand is injured. Your sister will take care of you for the next few days.”
Betty immediately refused.
“Mom, Hank hired a nanny for me. Please don’t bother Bella!”
My mother continued, “Betty, you’ve lost a lot of blood and are still weak. Hank is very busy with work, so he might not be able to give you the attention you need…”
Before my mother could finish, Betty immediately cut in, “Mom, Hank hasn’t neglected me. He treats me very well and respects me. We have a good relationship.”
Mom was just worried that Betty wouldn’t be properly cared for, especially since the nanny had to tend to the baby as well. But Betty’s response felt a little off. My mother immediately said, “Bella, did you hear that? Whenever I mention Hank, she speaks to me in such a tone.”
Betty lowered her head in silence. I quickly spoke up on her behalf, “Mom, don’t be upset. Betty is just like you—she loves wholeheartedly. What Ryan did to us in the past has left a mark on our family, and Betty didn’t mean to upset you.””How can you compare Ryan with Hank? Hank is a responsible man!” Betty added.
Hearing Betty’s words, I couldn’t help but frown. I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination, but Betty’s tone made me feel a bit uneasy.
