Chapter 377:
“Did you have a nightmare, Bella?” Lily’s concerned voice reached me.
I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead and replied, “I just had a nightmare.”
“I’ll get you a glass of water,” she offered kindly.
Lily returned with a glass of water and handed it to me. I took a small sip and muttered, “Thank you.”
She took the glass back, and I looked up at her hesitantly.
“Lily, I feel really unwell. I think I need to see a doctor tomorrow. Could you ask for leave on my behalf?”
“Of course. Don’t worry about it,” Lily said with a reassuring nod.
I knew that if I wanted to resign, I’d need to delay it for a few days to complete the process. But the thought of Herbert finding me again made me anxious. I had to leave as soon as possible.
The next morning, after everyone had left for work, I began packing my things. With my suitcase in hand, I left the staff dormitory.
First, I took a bus. Then, I hailed a taxi. After that, I carried my suitcase into a mall and walked for a long time before finally arriving at the train station.
I had taken so many steps because I suspected someone was following me.
Herbert always seemed to find me, so I was convinced I was being watched.
At the station, I glanced up at the large screen displaying train schedules. An overwhelming sense of despair washed over me. I felt lost.
Where could I go?
Back to A City? No, that was Herbert’s territory.
I stood there thinking for a while before making my decision. I would buy a ticket and let the train take me anywhere.
I was a capable adult. Even if I ended up in an unfamiliar place, I believed I could survive.
The line to buy tickets was long, but it was moving steadily. Soon, it would be my turn.
My phone suddenly rang.
Although the screen was cracked, I could still answer.
“Mom!” I called out once the call connected.
“Come back quickly. Your sister is going into labor!” My mother sounded anxious.
I hesitated, then asked, “Mom, isn’t there still half a month before the due date?”
“Your sister had an accident. The doctor said she’ll need a C-section. Please come home quickly!” My mom’s voice trembled with worry.
I quickly reassured her, “Mom, I’ll be there soon. You and Hank take care of Betty for now!”
“Okay, I’ll wait for you,” she said before hanging up.
As soon as the phone call ended, all my own struggles seemed insignificant. I focused entirely on my family. I bought a ticket to A City immediately and prepared to leave.
Betty was young, and my mom had always been fragile. Though Hank was reliable, he and Betty had not been together long enough for me to feel at ease leaving them alone. I had to take care of my closest family.
