He wrapped an arm around my shoulder and said, “I’ll take you back first.”
I didn’t object and nodded obediently. I was too afraid of facing danger again. I was exhausted, my body aching, and I couldn’t endure any more pain or torment.
He drove me to the best hotel in town and booked a luxurious suite. Once inside, he spoke gently, “Go take a hot shower. You’ll feel better.”
“Yes,” I replied softly, nodding again. I knew I needed it.
I removed my torn clothes and stepped into the bathtub. The warm water enveloped me, and for the first time that night, I felt a sense of comfort and warmth.An hour later, I stepped out of the bathtub, drying off with a towel. As I glanced at my reflection in the mirror, I saw bruises on my cheeks and mouth, and my arms and legs were marked with purple and red spots. In my moment of danger, fate had sent a brave knight to save me.
The knight was waiting outside. I slipped into a bathrobe and walked out of the bathroom.
I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude toward him for saving me. Klein looked at me, his expression soft, and poured me a glass of juice.
“You look a bit better,” he said.
His voice was soothing, like a balm to my frayed nerves. I walked over to a single sofa, sat down, and took the glass of juice from him. Klein looked at me with concern.
“What happened to your face? Did those two guys hurt you?”
I shook my head, trying to push away the lingering anger.
“Today has just been unlucky. I was beaten by Connie and Emma.”
I was still upset. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have crossed paths with those two vile men.
But then, a thought flashed through my mind.
“How could it be so coincidental?”
I had only just left the hotel, and already, I encountered trouble. As far as I knew, the security in this town was very tight since it was a tourist destination run by the government.
Could it be… that Connie and Emma had set me up? Had they arranged for those two thugs to attack me?
Klein interrupted my thoughts.
“What are you thinking about? Emma? Your sister in the legal sense?”
He knew her, having previously taught her a lesson.
“Who else could have such a deep grudge against me other than them?” I replied.
“Right. So, how did you run into them?” Klein asked, his curiosity piqued.
“I’m working as an accountant for a travel agency in Wharton Mountain. Today, the tour guide fell ill, so I had to step in and lead a group. I didn’t expect that Connie and Emma would be part of it,” I explained.
“No wonder your face is swollen,” Klein said sympathetically.
“I’ve prepared an ice pack for you. You’ll need it, or your face will get worse tomorrow.”
He stood up and handed me a towel-wrapped ice pack. I took it with both hands, feeling a deep sense of gratitude.
“If I hadn’t met you tonight, I don’t know what would have happened. Thank you.”
