Chapter 336:
I reached out, pulling Joey back down into her seat. Though I felt incredibly uncomfortable, I forced a smile.
“However they choose to get married is their business. This doesn’t concern us.”
My voice was calm, but deep down, I knew just how much it bothered me.
Joey was still upset.
“Bella, they’ll definitely get divorced!” she said, her frustration obvious.
I reached out again, gently pulling on Joey’s arm to motion for her to sit down. Looking around, she noticed how many people were watching her, causing her face to flush red. She quickly sat back down, but the crowd around us continued discussing the scene on the screen.
“The wedding photos on the screen are so beautiful. Is it an advertisement?” one girl remarked, pointing at the screen.
Another girl responded, “Is that a real wedding photo? I heard the president of the Wharton Group is getting married.”
When the first girl heard this, she crossed her arms in front of her chest and said enviously, “They rented such a huge ad screen just for their wedding photo? That bride is so lucky!”
“That man’s a big boss. He probably doesn’t care about the money,” another girl added.
“That means he loves his fiancée so much, he wants the whole world to know about their happy marriage!” someone else chimed in.
“It has nothing to do with us. Let’s go!” the girl behind said, pulling the other away.
No matter how strong I tried to be or how indifferent I pretended to act, I couldn’t lie to myself. At that moment, it felt as if a huge stone was pressing on my chest, making it hard to breathe.
Joey placed her hand on my shoulder, and I looked at her before pulling her into a tight hug.
The words the girl had just spoken still echoed in my mind—Herbert’s feelings for Caroline were true love. Those words felt like a sharp knife, piercing straight into my heart. I touched my chest, feeling an overwhelming discomfort. Joey didn’t say anything; she simply held me tightly. I was grateful to have a close friend like her to rely on. Without her, I would have completely broken down.
I thought I had recovered, but I had overestimated my ability to heal. His name seemed to be deeply embedded in my heart, impossible to forget.
A few minutes later, Joey pulled away and smiled, “Why don’t we go back? I’ll cook something delicious for you. Let’s make a plan. Tomorrow, we’ll focus on high-end stores and shopping malls. We can work for a month or so to cover our living expenses. What do you think?”
I nodded and said, “Why don’t you go ahead first? I’d like to be alone for a while.”
Joey frowned and gripped my hand tightly. Knowing how much she cared, I forced a smile and said, “Don’t worry. I won’t do anything drastic. I’m still young, and I still have a future ahead of me.”
Joey nodded, gave me a few instructions, and then left. Once she was gone, I sat on the bench for a long time, my eyes repeatedly drawn to the massive wedding photo on the screen.
A few minutes later, the advertisements on the screen changed, and the wedding photos of Herbert and Caroline were replaced. I slowly stood up, walking down the street in a daze.
Ring, ring, ring… My phone suddenly rang. Who could it be?I glanced at my phone screen. It was a call from Amy.
