“What happened at the law firm?” Joey asked, surprised.
I then told Joey everything that had happened in the past two days.
Joey examined my face closely.
“Your mouth is injured. Did Emma do this to you? That woman is as annoying as a fly.”
“She was beaten too, but she got $800 for medical expenses,” I frowned.
“Emma might be easy to deal with, but the real problem is Selina. She’s very scheming and malicious. You have to be careful!” Joey warned.
“I know I have to be careful, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do now,” I replied, feeling hopeless.
“This is definitely a troublesome situation. What are you planning to do next?” Joey asked, looking at me with concern.
I sat in silence for two minutes before finally saying, “I want to resign.”
“Resign? Is this really your solution?” Joey asked, surprised.
“Other than resigning, I can’t think of any other way. Right now, everyone in the company is talking about the negative opinions regarding Klein and me. If Klein’s girlfriend were to show up in the company, it would only make things worse.”
This was the decision I had made after a long period of consideration.
“You’re willing to give up such a good job? Your salary is higher than before. I just want to remind you that your rent, living expenses, your mother’s expenses, and your sister’s university fees all cost a lot. Even if you really want to resign, you should find another job first. It’s tough finding a good one these days. I have a colleague who’s been out of the Wharton Group for half a year and still hasn’t found something suitable.”
Joey objected to my resignation. What she said was true. I looked at her helplessly and replied, “You’re just repeating everything I told you when you tried to convince me.”
“We’re all struggling, and stress is constantly weighing us down. We have to consider these things. Being poor not only limits our imagination, it also chips away at our self-esteem! But hey, honestly, I think it might be better if you started a relationship with Klein. That way, your work would be secure, and your relationship issues could be settled too.”
Joey shrugged and teased me.
“Screw you. I’m not doing that. Eat up, or you’ll be late.”
After I said that, I lowered my head and started eating my lunch.
Joey glanced at her watch and, without saying another word, also lowered her head, taking large bites of her lunch.
That afternoon, I thought long and hard and ultimately decided to resign. I knew how much Klein liked me. Although I had made it clear before, he still held a good impression of me. If it were only about my previous efforts, I could likely keep my job and maintain a professional distance from him.
But the situation had become more complicated. If I stayed, I would just continue to face more trouble.
Therefore, resignation was the best choice for me.
As for finding a job, I could take something with an offer that wasn’t as good. Once I had an income, I could figure out ways to increase it. After making my decision, I quickly wrote up a resignation letter.
I was afraid I might change my mind, so I put the resignation letter in my pocket and walked out of the office.
