Chapter 233:
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I haven’t been sleeping well these past couple of days,” I said, putting my tableware down.
“Did you fall in love again?” Joey asked suddenly, her eyes wide open.
“No!” I replied with a dismissive look.
“Then what’s going on with you?” Joey was clearly curious.
I sighed and told her everything that had happened over the past few days. In the end, I said with melancholy, “Lately, whenever I close my eyes, my mind is filled with thoughts of Lucas. I don’t know what’s happening. What do you think I should do?”
Joey lowered her head, deep in thought for a moment. Then she said, “What a coincidence! Your child was dead, so Herbert went to the orphanage to adopt one? It’s so strange.”
Joey’s words immediately struck a chord with me, and I replied, “I feel the same way. But he made it sound so convincing. I don’t know if I should believe it.”
“Why don’t you go to the orphanage and investigate? After all, there are formal procedures to adopt a child,” Joey suggested.
“But I don’t even know which orphanage Herbert adopted Lucas from,” I responded.
Joey thought for a moment and then said, “Do you think Gaynor, the one taking care of Lucas, might know something?”
“I’ve heard that she’s been taking care of Lucas the whole time. She might know something. I’ll try to ask her. Honestly, I miss Lucas a lot. I feel like I need to see that little baby again,” I said.
Joey smirked and teased, “You’re done for, Bella. You were already captivated by Herbert, and now his son has you even more obsessed. If they’re in cahoots, you’ll have nowhere to hide.”
“You’re always making fun of me,” I rolled my eyes.
“I’d love to see who will make you obsessed in the future.”
Joey laughed.
“I guess they haven’t been born yet!”
About ten minutes later, Joey and I left the restaurant. Just a few steps later, I looked up and suddenly saw a familiar figure in front of me. Caroline saw me too. Our eyes met for a moment, and then I quickly turned my head away. I didn’t like her and didn’t want to engage in a conversation.
“What bad luck,” Joey muttered, “I run into a mistress when I’m just out for a meal!”
Caroline heard this and stormed over, immediately retaliating with sarcasm, “Whose dog is it that isn’t tied up? Why did it come out and bite people?”
“Who are you calling a dog?” Joey shot back, pointing angrily at Caroline.
“I didn’t say it’s you. Why did you think it’s you?” Caroline smirked provocatively.
“What did you say?” Joey’s temper flared.
Unable to hold back, Joey immediately rushed toward Caroline to confront her. I quickly grabbed Joey.
“Forget it. I don’t want to argue with this kind of person,” I said, trying to calm her down.
Caroline shouted, “You two want to bully me, don’t you?”
“So what if I bully you?” I retorted.
Joey stepped forward and gave Caroline a push.
