“Ah… Ah…”
Although he couldn’t speak, he seemed to understand what I meant. His little chubby hand pointed outside.
I walked out of the house with Lucas in my arms, strolling in the garden while playing with him. Soon, his mood calmed down, and he became very happy. He began to laugh, and the shock on his face disappeared immediately.
However, despite his happiness, I couldn’t leave. His little hand kept holding onto my neck, refusing to let go.
I was in a dilemma. I couldn’t let go of my job, but I couldn’t bear to let go of Lucas.
Half an hour later, I sat on the sofa with Lucas on my lap. I fed him milk.
Herbert was sitting on the other sofa, looking down at a stack of documents on his legs, as if he was working.
I didn’t talk to him, but I couldn’t help glancing at him. Ring… Ring… Suddenly, his cell phone rang.
Herbert took the phone, glanced at the flashing number on the screen, and then answered it.
I couldn’t hear what the person on the other end of the phone said, but Herbert responded, “Cancel the meeting at 10 o’clock in the morning. Reschedule it for another time.”
Was the meeting in the morning canceled? I guessed he was worried about Lucas. I looked down at the little one in my arms and said, “If you have something to do, just go. Lucas doesn’t want to see you right now. I’ll take care of him for another day.”
Herbert glanced at me and said, “Then you’ll have to work hard for another day. I’ll finish work early this evening and come back to help you.”
“Okay,” I nodded. Only then did he gather his documents. Finally, he glanced at me and Lucas before turning to leave.
After Herbert left, I was left feeling complicated. I hadn’t expected that he and I would meet again under these circumstances. This was Klein’s responsibility. He hadn’t explained who Lucas belonged to. But if Klein had told me Lucas was Herbert’s son, would I have agreed to help?
I lowered my head and looked at Lucas, who had finished his milk. He lay in my arms, sound asleep. My heart softened. If it weren’t for the situation, how could I take care of him?
He was so cute. I couldn’t leave him.
Herbert’s POV:
When I saw Bella holding Lucas, I felt a surge of warmth.
The conflict between Bella and me had been intense. It was almost to the point where we would argue whenever we met. But I didn’t expect that the tension between us seemed to be easing because of Lucas.
He really liked Bella, and it seemed she liked him just as much. She had even volunteered to stay and take care of him.
That was a good sign. At least it could be a turning point between Bella and me.
Before five o’clock in the afternoon, I finished my work and got in the car to go home. I had just returned from a week-long business trip. There was a lot to do at the company, so I handled the most urgent documents as quickly as possible. I was eager to see Lucas and Bella.
Ring, ring.
