Chapter 229:
If I had been in a state of hopelessness, perhaps I wouldn’t have felt so bad.
It was like a wound. After a long time, it formed a scab. Although the wound was still there, it no longer hurt visibly.
But just now, I really thought that Lucas was my child, and it had reignited my hope. Then it was shattered. This feeling was like tearing the scab off a wound. I lowered my head, trying to adjust my mood.
Soon, I heard Herbert’s voice.
“Now can you tell me why you are here?”
“Gaynor caught a severe cold and was afraid of infecting Lucas. Klein couldn’t find a nanny to take care of him, so he had no choice but to ask me to take care of Lucas for a few days.”
I replied calmly.
Herbert frowned and said, “My family doesn’t know that I adopted Lucas. So I hope that you won’t reveal this secret. I want Lucas to grow up in a normal environment, and I don’t want him involved in the family struggles. It’s not good for his growth.”
Herbert was very thoughtful, and what he was worried about was indeed a valid concern. I knew Herbert’s mother too well. She might not have agreed to him adopting Lucas, and Caroline was a tough person.
It was indeed beneficial to keep the secret of adopting Lucas from the public. We didn’t continue to talk, and the atmosphere in the room became a little tense. I said, “Since you’re back, I should go.”
After that, I turned around and began packing up my things. At this point, Herbert, who had been standing behind me, said, “You can leave tomorrow morning. It’s very late now, and there’s no taxi around at this hour.”
I stopped packing. He was right. There were no taxis available at night.
“Ah… ah…”
At that moment, Lucas tried to climb into my arms. My heart softened when I saw his face. I immediately reached out and held him close.
As soon as he was back in my arms, he began rubbing his eyes and hugging my neck. I said to Herbert, “He’s sleepy. Let me coax him to sleep. You should go and rest.”
Herbert’s expression softened considerably.
“Sorry for troubling you.”
Herbert gently touched Lucas’s head and turned to leave the room. The baby quickly fell asleep in my arms. I gently placed him on the bed and sat by, watching him sleep.
In truth, I didn’t want to leave Lucas tonight, but I had to leave tomorrow. At this moment, my heart was full of attachment to him, and it even surpassed my previous feelings for Herbert.
This feeling was amazing. It was clear that Lucas wasn’t my son. I had only taken care of him for a few days, but I had already developed a deep bond with him…
Bella’s POV:
The next morning, I went downstairs with Lucas, who had just woken up in my arms. At this moment, the hourly worker had already cleaned the living room. She looked at me and said with a smile, “The breakfast is ready.”
“Okay,” I nodded and walked into the dining room with Lucas.
As soon as I entered the dining room, I saw a man in a white shirt sitting at the dining table. He wasn’t eating at the moment but was reading the newspaper in his hand. This was his habit—he liked to look through the newspaper in the morning.
Herbert didn’t look up, and I didn’t say hello to him. I sat at the seat on the left side with Lucas in my arms.
