My heart trembled for a moment, but I quickly stopped looking at him.
“Go to bed early,” he said.
Then, he turned and walked toward the door.
As soon as he opened the door, something suddenly clicked in my mind.
“Wait!” I shouted.
I rushed to the bedroom, grabbed the brooch, and walked up to Herbert.
“You left this at my house last time.”
Herbert didn’t reach out to take the brooch from my hand. After a long silence, he said, “I didn’t forget it. I specifically gave it to you.”
A gift for me?
To be honest, hearing him say that made my eyes sting with tears. I still had feelings for Herbert, and hearing that he had given me the brooch as a gift made my heart swell with emotion. But after a short period of joy, my reason returned very quickly.
Even if what he said was true, so what? Herbert was still as overbearing and unreasonable as before. Caroline was still by his side, and their relationship remained ambiguous.

I looked down at the brooch in my hand and asked, “What do you mean?”
“I think two people who love each other should trust each other, but why are you always so suspicious and distrustful of me?” Herbert said, sadness creeping into his voice.
“Do you mean that we love each other?” I asked, my voice laced with disbelief.
His words felt like the lamest joke in the world.
He had loved Caroline for ten years. For her, he had gone to America. For her, he had divorced me. After I lost our child, he had chosen their wedding rings with her. But now, he said he loved me? I wasn’t stupid, I didn’t believe him.
“Isn’t that the case?” Herbert asked, a hint of confusion in his tone.
Unable to restrain the sadness welling up inside, I sneered and said, “If the two people who love each other are not together, then why are they apart? Why do the people who love each other want to divorce?”
I looked at Herbert desperately, my eyes already wet with unshed tears. In truth, it wasn’t entirely his fault, was it? He was a good man, but the person he loved was Caroline.
