Chapter 207:
The grand crystal chandeliers dimmed, and a melodious waltz began to play. The guests gracefully paired up, swaying across the dance floor.
Meanwhile, Herbert continued fumbling with the brooch, his fingers brushing against my skin occasionally. It was driving me insane.
My heart raced—because of him.
“Are you done?” I asked irritably.
He didn’t answer, still focused on the brooch.
Impatient, I blurted out, “Why don’t we just get a pair of scissors?”
Still, he remained silent.
Frustrated, I stomped my foot.
“Did you hear me?”
Before he could respond, Caroline appeared, walking toward us with Klein following close behind.
“Herbert, I’ll help you!” Caroline offered.
Her presence made me uneasy.
Whenever she was around, trouble wasn’t far behind.
Just then, Herbert successfully unfastened the brooch from my chest. Without even looking at Caroline, he said indifferently, “No need. I’ve already taken it off.”
I immediately took two steps back, putting distance between us.
“Are you alright?” Klein asked, stepping forward.
“I’m fine. Let’s go,” I said, shaking my head.
With one last glance at Herbert, I turned and walked away.
Klein followed close behind.
After just a few steps, Klein extended his hand toward me.
“Bella, would you like to dance with me?”
I didn’t particularly want to dance, but the banquet hall was dimly lit, and I wasn’t sure where else to go. For now, accepting his invitation seemed like the easiest option.
The soft glow of the chandeliers, the beautiful melody of the waltz—many guests were lost in the atmosphere.
But despite everything, my attention kept drifting elsewhere.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of them.
“You’re not very focused,” Klein remarked.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered, offering a quick apology.
I tried to focus, forcing myself to stop looking at Herbert.
Herbert’s POV:
Caroline looked up at me, her expression delicate yet probing.
“Herbert, that brooch was too expensive. I feel guilty that you spent so much money on it.”
My voice was cold and distant as I replied, “I think it has a special meaning.”
I had never intended for her to have it.
Caroline pursed her lips into a smile.
