Chapter 197:
“I’m fine. Just feeling a little dizzy.”
I didn’t tell him the real reason.
“Let me help you. Have a seat over there?” Klein offered.
I nodded, thinking that sitting in a quiet corner might help me avoid running into Herbert.
I looked up, and my heart sank.
The more I had dreaded this moment, the more inevitable it became.
It was utterly, painfully awkward.
Herbert was dressed in a black suit, while Caroline wore a long red fishtail dress. As soon as I looked up, I caught the fierce look in Herbert’s eyes, and my heart couldn’t help but race. But then I reminded myself that when we were still married, they were already acting in a way that hurt me. It was clear that they had wronged me, so why should I be afraid now?
Thinking of this, I immediately straightened my back and said, “Herbert, Caroline, you two came as well?”
Klein glanced at Herbert, but Herbert’s expression remained cold, and the atmosphere suddenly grew tense. Caroline let out a cold laugh as she looked at Klein.
“Klein, you actually brought your cousin’s ex-wife to the Reina Family gathering. Were you trying to make things difficult for our Wharton Family on purpose?”
Klein turned to look at me, then asked Caroline, “Whose ex-wife?”
“What’s wrong? You don’t even know? It seems like you’ve been deceived by someone,” Caroline replied with feigned surprise.

I rolled my eyes at Klein. The reason I had accompanied him today was because I was grateful for his help. Plus, I didn’t know Herbert would be at the party. But now, with Caroline bringing it up, it seemed like I had intentionally done this to provoke Herbert. Since the topic was out in the open, I felt it was my responsibility to clarify.
I looked at Klein and said, “She’s right. I’m your cousin’s ex-wife.”
Klein’s face showed a look of surprise.
“So that day…was because…” he trailed off, his shock evident.
He didn’t finish his sentence, but the surprised expression remained on his face.
“If you still care about the Wharton Family’s honor, then you should take her away immediately. Don’t bring shame to the family here!” Caroline said excitedly.
I knew Caroline was doing this deliberately. She cared more about Herbert than anything, and her words were meant to tarnish my reputation in front of him. But I no longer had any ties to Herbert, and Caroline’s words couldn’t hurt me.
I looked at Klein and said, “I’m very sorry. I didn’t immediately tell you about this, but I didn’t know that the other Mr. Wharton would be here. I have some matters to attend to, so I’ll leave early.”
Klein had been nothing but kind to me, and I didn’t want him to be put in an awkward position. As soon as I turned to leave, Klein grabbed my hand and said, “You’re my female companion tonight. Aside from the host of this party, no one has the right to make you leave!”
I was a little surprised by his words. He wasn’t blaming me. Instead, he stood by me, protecting me and trusting me.
I felt incredibly grateful.
Then, Klein turned to Caroline and said, “If I remember correctly, you haven’t married my cousin yet. You’re not even part of my family. Therefore, you don’t have the right to accuse me as a member of the Wharton Family.”
Herbert’s POV:
