Chapter 143:
“In fact, there’s another reason you don’t know,” Caroline continued with a smile.
“You make me very unhappy when you stay in K City. Herbert doesn’t want me to be unhappy, so he sent you here. Without you, he and I can live a very happy life in K City. We can always be together. Every morning, the first person I see when I wake up is him. Every night, he’ll hold me to sleep.”
Caroline moved closer to me with a smile, each step making me more anxious.
All the effort I had put into recovering my composure was shattered. I never imagined this would be the reason Herbert insisted on sending me here. It turned out that he saw me as an obstacle to Caroline’s happiness in K City.
Caroline continued, “Do you know? As soon as you left, Herbert took me to your former home, and we lived there. Now I’m sleeping in the big bed you once slept in. The bed is so large, perfect for us to make love. Maybe you didn’t satisfy him when you were with him, did you? He’s been pestering me every night these past few months, and I could barely get up in the morning…”
“Stop!”
I couldn’t take it anymore and shouted in agitation. It had taken me days to buy the curtains, sheets, and bedding for that house. They were all in colors I loved. Now, they were being occupied by another woman. And of course, my beloved Herbert had become hers. My hand instinctively touched my chest as a sharp pain ran through me.
“Haha…”
Caroline threw her head back and laughed.
“I’m a little tired today,” she said.
“I’ll come back to talk to you another time. I’ll tell you all about his preferences, especially those in bed.”
Caroline gave me a provocative smile before turning and leaving. At that moment, Miranda entered with a cup of tea. As Caroline turned around, she bumped into Miranda, spilling the coffee all over Caroline and causing the cup to fall onto the carpet.
“You don’t have eyes?”
Caroline looked down at her wet clothes and immediately shouted at Miranda.
“Sorry, I didn’t see you,” Miranda quickly apologized.
“I was here all along, how could you not see me? What bad luck!”
Caroline muttered a few more words under her breath before storming off.
After Caroline left, Miranda came to me and asked anxiously, “Mrs. Wharton, are you all right? Do you want me to call Mr. Wharton?”
No, I’m fine. Take me upstairs to rest.”
My voice trembled as I spoke.
“All right.”
Miranda helped me up the stairs. I had no appetite at all, only the echo of Caroline’s words playing in my mind. After a sleepless night, my stomach began to ache.
At first, I thought I would feel better after resting for a while, but the pain only intensified. Eventually, fear set in.
It wasn’t until Miranda brought my meals that she suddenly exclaimed, “Mrs. Wharton, your amniotic fluid has broken!”
My amniotic fluid had broken? Was I going into labor?
