Bride of Mr. Billion - Chapter 80

Chapter 80:

He had arranged everything perfectly. My eyes fell on the keys and bank cards placed on the tea table, and a sudden wave of sadness washed over me. His tone had been so formal, like a boss giving orders to an employee, devoid of any warmth that should exist between a husband and wife.

“Thank you,” I said softly, lowering my eyes.

At that moment, Herbert glanced down at the watch on his wrist and said, “You can familiarize yourself with the place. I have some things to attend to, so I’ll leave first.”

“Okay,” I nodded.

Only when I heard the sound of the door closing did I realize he had truly left.

Looking around the large, empty house, I suddenly felt a deep sense of loneliness. Being alone in such a spacious place felt isolating.

I carried my luggage upstairs and noticed there were two bedrooms. One was significantly larger, complete with a bathroom and a walk-in closet—clearly the master bedroom. The other room was smaller but clean and tidy.

I hesitated, unsure of which room to choose. Before leaving, Herbert hadn’t specified where I should sleep.

After some thought, I decided to take the smaller bedroom. After all, I was pregnant and often woke up during the night. Sharing a bed would likely disturb his rest. Besides, I couldn’t fulfill his normal physiological needs at the moment, so it made sense for us to sleep separately.

I spent the next few hours exploring the house. While I wasn’t particularly fond of the decor or the furniture, I couldn’t deny that the place was fully equipped. The bathroom was stocked with all kinds of daily necessities, and the refrigerator was filled with expensive ingredients. It was clear that no expense had been spared.

I glanced at the bank card he had left for me. It had a monthly limit of 100,000. Financially, I wouldn’t have to worry about anything. Yet, after just a few hours, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being kept like a caged canary. It made me deeply uncomfortable.

Around five in the afternoon, I received a message from Herbert.

“I’ll be home for dinner around seven.”

It was a simple message, just a dozen words, but I stared at it for a long time. Was he expecting me to cook?

I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed. He just casually informed me to prepare dinner and wait for him!

However, I reminded myself that I was living here rent-free, with access to money and a comfortable life. Not to mention, he had recently stood up for me against my enemy, Emma Briden.

“Fine, I can make dinner,” I muttered to myself.

I got up and headed to the kitchen to see what I could prepare. Cooking wasn’t a big deal for me. I didn’t have a job here, and I had plenty of time on my hands.

Within an hour, I had dinner ready.

I glanced up at the clock on the wall. It was exactly seven o’clock. Just then, the door opened, and a man in a black suit walked in. I hadn’t expected him to be so punctual.

“You’re back? We can have dinner.”

“Okay,” Herbert nodded. He took off his coat, changed into slippers, and walked over to the dining table.

Sitting down, he glanced at the spread before him: steak, fried onions, steamed eggs, corn soup, and a vegetable salad.
