On the surface, her response seemed innocent, but Gorman could feel there was more to it.
He weighed his options. The truth would unravel everything he had built.
Linsey’s nature was to question. If he stayed quiet, she would keep digging until she unearthed the truth.
If that happened, everything he had built would collapse in an instant.
He couldn’t afford hesitation. After a swift calculation, he strung together yet another lie to hold up the first. “Her grave’s in a well-known cemetery overseas. If you ever want to go, I’ll take you there.”
“All right,” Linsey said with a trusting look, giving him a smile.
As if nothing had passed between them, she picked up her utensils and began to slice into her meat. Her tone stayed casual as she asked, “Is it in Necroessau?”
“That’s right,” Gorman answered, already plotting how to steer their chat elsewhere.
Before he could redirect, Linsey leaned in, refusing to let go. “Necroessau has a ton of famous cemeteries. Which one is it? I think I know at least a dozen by name.”
She even rattled off several names, each one among the most famous.
The way she listed them made something in Gorman’s expression shift. “Since when do you know so much about cemeteries, Linsey?”
The truth was, she had spent hours online last night, searching for any hint about his fiancée’s supposed resting place. Sleepless curiosity had led her through pages and pages of Necroessau’s most renowned cemeteries.
Linsey kept her tone light, weaving a story that almost sounded believable. “One of our senior executives passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. To honor his work, the company planned a runway show—models would wear his designs and walk through the cemetery.”
She let the words settle before adding, “Since he was from Necroessau, we reviewed the possible sites ahead of time to decide which location would be most fitting.”
Everything she said held a sliver of truth. Someone from her company really had passed away, and there had been conversations about honoring him. But he hadn’t come from Necroessau.
When she finished, Gorman gave no immediate reply. His unreadable eyes lingered on her, leaving her uncertain whether he believed her or not.
“Did he get suspicious?” Linsey wondered anxiously.
But just then, Gorman said, “Makes sense now. No wonder you rattled off all those names.”
Relief rushed through her chest, though she hid it well.
Then, with a practiced ease, Gorman named one of Necroessau’s best-known cemeteries. “She’s there. The famous one.”
Linsey etched the name into memory, keeping her face composed and her mouth firmly closed.
