Chapter 1836:
Because she couldn’t explain it. Not then. Not now.
Back then, she had woken up covered in marks she couldn’t account for, yet her body had told her nothing had happened.
But no one had believed her.
They cared only about what they saw. She had been branded a cheater. Just like she was being branded now.
Now, she had no explanation as to why her daughter had no blood relation to Elwood.
Her silence gave Tamara everything she needed. With a cold smile curling her lips, she continued, “What’s wrong now? You were so talkative a minute ago. Cat got your tongue?”
Carola didn’t respond.
Her fury had cooled, hardened into something quieter.
What was the point in discussing this further?
A soft, humorless laugh left her lips.
“You’ve already made up your minds,” she said flatly.
“So fine. Let’s say I was wrong.”
“Let’s say my daughter isn’t Elwood’s.”
Tamara’s face twisted into a smirk.
“There it is!” she said with triumph.
“Faced with the truth, she finally caves.”
Then she turned toward Elwood with narrowed eyes.
“Now do you understand why we didn’t want you to recover your memories? She’s not the woman you thought she was. She’s just a deceitful, manipulative liar.”
Elwood didn’t answer. He just stood there, staring at Carola like he was seeing her for the first time.
He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, and he hated himself for not being able to remember.
If he could regain his memory, he would know what had really happened back then, instead of just listening to them talk, not knowing if what they said was true.

A pounding began behind his eyes, and his temples throbbed with dull, growing pain. He knew he needed time to calm down, so without a word, he turned and walked out.
Tamara watched him go, her smile returning like a mask sliding back into place.
“Let’s go.”
And just like that, the Wright family members rose to their feet and filed out, leaving a heavy silence behind.
In moments, the living room was stripped of noise and tension, leaving only Carola, Kylee, and Baker.
Kylee and Baker exchanged glances, their thoughts racing to keep up with what they’d just heard.
It was only now that they learned the truth behind Carola and Elwood’s painful separation.
Then Carola turned, her eyes glinting coldly as they locked onto Baker.
