Chapter 1824:
They would come for Kylee—of that, she had no doubt.
She would never allow it. No matter who they were or what claims they made, Kylee was hers. Even if her daughter was not perfect by others’ standards, she was still her flesh and blood, irreplaceable.
“I am leaving,” she said curtly. She then stood from the sofa, grabbed her bag, and made for the door without a glance back.
“Carola.” Elwood’s voice stopped her mid-step.
She paused, her back to him, fingers tightening around her bag.
“Can you tell me,” Elwood continued, his tone edged with frustration and something more vulnerable, “what really happened between us back then? I cannot shake the feeling that there was some kind of misunderstanding.”
“There was no misunderstanding between us,” Carola said coldly.
Yet, as the words left her mouth, a flicker of something—regret, perhaps—crossed her eyes.
She exhaled slowly, as though releasing a burden too heavy to carry further.
“Elwood, you do not remember anything from the past because of your memory loss. But if the day ever comes when you regain those memories…”
“You will realize that there is no misunderstanding between us.” With that, Carola turned sharply on her heel and strode out, not bothering to wait for Elwood’s reply.
Elwood sat there, eyes trailing after her until she disappeared from sight. A storm of feelings churned inside him, restless and heavy.
Somewhere deep down, he knew Carola had feelings for him. But he also knew that she harbored resentment and anger toward him.
He had never been this desperate to uncover the truth of what had happened all those years ago.
But his mother… she had been meticulous, almost ruthless, in erasing every trace of the past. She had left nothing behind, not even a thread for him to tug at. That was what frustrated him the most.
In the evening, Lucas pulled up outside Belinda’s mentor’s house to pick her up.
The moment she slipped into the passenger seat, she let out a soft sigh and reclined, her head resting against the backrest. Her body sagged with exhaustion, though a quiet satisfaction lingered beneath it.

She had pushed herself hard during piano practice today, and the effort had paid off, but it had left her drained.
Seeing her like this, Lucas drove in silence, letting her rest. Only when they arrived home did Belinda finally seem to regain some of her energy.
They stepped into the living room to find Kenia sitting on the couch, eyes fixed on the television.
“Grandma, why are you still up this late?” Belinda asked.
Kenia smiled warmly.
“I will sleep soon.”
Belinda pressed her lips together, hesitating before she asked, “How is Sarai doing?”
“She is well,” Kenia replied, nodding.
“She was happy when she heard you agreed to let her stay in Owathe. She promised to focus on her recovery.”
