Stepping into the house, she spotted Tamara and Zaria lounging on the living room couch, eyes glued to the TV. Nalani opened her mouth to speak, but the sound of the front door creaking open cut her off. Moments later, Elwood strolled in.
Catching sight of him, Nalani didn’t hesitate. “Elwood, perfect timing! There’s something I want to ask you.”
Elwood met her gaze, his face calm. “Ask away.”
“Is it true you suddenly have a daughter?” Nalani asked bluntly.
Tamara and Zaria froze at that, exchanging a quick, bewildered glance.
Tamara turned to Nalani, her voice tinged with confusion. “Elwood suddenly has a daughter? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Not suddenly,” Elwood clarified, his tone steady. “She’s always been my daughter; I only just learned about her.”
Tamara’s brow furrowed deeply. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m lost.”
Elwood took a breath before saying, “Mom, Nalani, I was planning to tell you about it today.”
Pausing for a moment, he continued, “I found my biological daughter. I’m heading back to Soling soon to throw a banquet to welcome her back to our family.”
“Your biological daughter?” Tamara’s face was a mask of disbelief as she stared at him. “Who is it?”
Zaria’s expression shifted, her mind reeling.
Elwood had a biological daughter? How could that be? Who was it?
With calm certainty, Elwood answered, “You both know her. It’s Kylee. She is the daughter of Carola and me.”
“Say that again?” Tamara’s voice wavered. She felt as if her ears had betrayed her.
“Kylee,” Elwood repeated, his tone unwavering.
Tamara’s hands flew to her mouth.

Zaria, equally stunned, stared at Elwood.
Kylee was Elwood and Carola’s daughter?
That was impossible!
Her mind raced back to the paternity test she had secretly arranged with Elwood’s and Kylee’s blood samples—it had shown no relation.
Thinking of that, Zaria asked directly, “Dad, how can you be so sure Kylee is your daughter?”
When Tamara heard Zaria’s words, her hands dropped from her face as she fixed a piercing stare on Elwood. “Exactly, Elwood. How can you be so certain about that?”
