Baker felt a surge of excitement that his plan had succeeded. This was the true purpose behind his visit to Elwood today. As long as Elwood gave his word, there was hope. His crumbling company could still claw its way back from the edge of ruin. He clung to that belief like a lifeline. Even if Elwood failed to convince Lucas to show mercy, Baker was certain Elwood would find another way to help him. With Elwood’s support, there was nothing for him to worry about. The thought alone made his pulse quicken with joy.
His eyes shimmered with fervent gratitude as he looked at Elwood, his voice thick with emotion. “Thank you.”
Elwood didn’t respond. He simply sat there, his expression unreadable. Deep inside, however, doubt gnawed at him. He wasn’t sure he could convince Lucas to let Baker off.
After parting ways with Baker, Elwood slid into the driver’s seat of his car. For a moment, he sat still, staring through the windshield. Then, with a sigh, he reached for his phone and dialed Lucas’s number.
It took a while before Lucas answered. “Hello.”
“Lucas, are you busy right now?” Elwood asked, his voice steady.
“Not at the moment. What’s up?” Lucas replied casually.
Elwood didn’t waste time with pleasantries. “Could we meet? There’s something important I need to discuss with you.”
“Of course. Swing by my office,” Lucas responded without hesitation.
“Alright.” Once the call ended, Elwood started the engine and made his way to the Triumph Consortium.
He arrived without incident. The receptionist nodded him through, and soon he was ushered into Lucas’s office.
Seeing Elwood sit down on the sofa, Lucas asked, “Elwood, what do you want to talk about?”

“Lucas, I really have something to implore of you today,” Elwood said.
The word hung in the air. Lucas’s brow arched ever so slightly, a flicker of intrigue passing through his expression. It wasn’t every day that Elwood used a word like “implore,” and that alone was enough to command his full attention. Lucas studied Elwood for a moment and then asked, “What is it?”
Elwood paused, weighing his words carefully before speaking. “I know you’ve made your stance clear—anyone who sides with the Wright Group is, by default, standing against you. Because of that, no company dares to work with them, and not a single bank is willing to lend them a loan. They’re teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.”
Lucas’s expression shifted subtly. At the mention of the Wright Group, a shadow passed through his eyes. “That’s true,” he said, his tone calm.
Since the matter was now laid bare, Elwood decided there was no point in circling around it. He leaned forward slightly, his voice earnest. “Lucas, I came today to ask if you might consider showing a bit of mercy and letting the Wright Group off.”
A low chuckle escaped Lucas, soft but unmistakably tinged with mockery. “You don’t have any real connection to the Wright family, do you?” he asked, calm but curious. “So why are you suddenly helping Baker?”
