“Kylee, does Baker treat you well?” Elwood asked gently.
“Absolutely,” Kylee replied, her voice full of certainty. “He’s incredibly kind to me.”

After a brief pause, Kylee bit her lip and asked, “Were you and Zaria’s mom close?”
Elwood let out a soft laugh before answering honestly, “Zaria’s an orphan. She doesn’t even know who her mother is.”
“What?” Kylee’s eyes widened in shock. “Zaria’s an orphan? So, she’s…”
Elwood met her gaze steadily. “I adopted Zaria from a local orphanage. After I parted ways with your mother, I never pursued another relationship or had other children. You, Kylee, are my only daughter.”
Kylee froze, stunned by his words. She was grappling with the revelation. Zaria was actually an adopted child?
Elwood had never remarried, nor had he fathered any other children. Carola’s daughter was his sole heir.
