When I confirmed her suspicions, she pressed further, wanting to know my thoughts about the whole thing.”
After a pause, Lucas continued, “She said that since Johnson and Catherine were foster siblings, they couldn’t be together. Even without blood ties, she said outsiders would inevitably spread malicious gossip about their relationship. So I shared every thought I had with complete honesty. I said that others’ opinions shouldn’t matter.” His face turned serious. “After she absorbed my words, her whole face transformed, suddenly radiating pure joy and satisfaction. She agreed enthusiastically and declared that as long as two people genuinely love each other, trivial matters like their identities shouldn’t create barriers between them. Even then, I suspected she was implying something. Now, the more I replay that conversation in my mind, the more it creeps me out.”
As he finished, Lucas’s brows knit together.
Belinda felt her breath catch as the implications hit her. She hadn’t expected this at all.
With a cold smile, she responded, “It sounds to me like she was suggesting something. She cleverly used Johnson and Catherine’s situation as a testing ground to gauge your feelings about unconventional relationships. Once she realized you didn’t care much about what people say, she probably thought there might be hope for you two to be together.”
As Belinda voiced these thoughts, a wave of revulsion flickered unmistakably in Lucas’s eyes. He felt nothing but deep discomfort, even a touch of nausea at the implications.
Observing how Lucas’s expression darkened with each passing moment, Belinda quickly said, “Stop dwelling on this. Let’s just wait for the investigation results to surface. Everything we’re discussing right now amounts to pure speculation, and without concrete proof, none of it might hold any truth whatsoever.”
As she spoke these reassuring words, she drew Lucas’s head down to rest against her shoulder.
